This week in the Garden (30th August) We've been loving the sunshine this week, and so have the plants. So lots of watering! Lots of beans have been harvested, and lettuces that have gone to seed have been taken out. All the brasicas in the polytunnel have been taken out to save them from the cabbage white caterpillars which have made themselves a nice home in there. We've planted the brassicas in the old tattie patch, in amongst some newly sown winter lettuces. The tomatoes, which have been yellowing on the leaves, have now been given a good feed, and a handful of compost has gone around them for an added kick. We've also planted out lots of lovely varieties of herbs that we got from Plants with a Purpose. Finally, some heroic compost seiving has been going on making some lovely compost to mulch the beds with come autumn time. Roll on sunshine! Call out for Sessional Workers! Fancy clocking up some experience working with groups in the gardens? Think you can inspire schoolkids to get mucky? We are looking to build up a base of sessional workers who can dip in and out of the garden groups, or take on specific pieces of work as and when they arise. If you're interested please get in touch with Abi on 0141 613 2766. Let's Cook Together
The group has been running for a few months now but is always open to new members. Currently meeting on a Friday between 12-2 at the Toryglen Community Halls. The group have cooked food from Sri Lanka, Iraq, Africa and Scotland. As an extra bonus, fresh produce should be available from the gardens very soon... The group will providing the catering for the Blossom Festival - freshly made soup and rolls. Come along and sample their wares!
Renewable Energy System All the equipment has now arrived - solar panels and wind turbine and pedal powered generator! We had a play around with the bike generator and have powered up a radio - good start! We'll be using it at the Blossom Festival for pedal powered scalectrix The system will be used to power our very own Blossom Festival, for educational purposes during our climate change workshops, and will be made available to other groups and organisations throughout the city for hire. We are really excited about this new development at Urban Roots. To find out more or to get involved with the renewable energy project please get in touch. |
